Demo! Demo!

June 25, 2010

I have to start this post by wishing Sir Paul a belated Happy Birthday. I was working my tail off last week and didn’t get a chance to write anything. Paul McCartney has always been my “favorite” Beatle, as those things go. And since recording the White Album, I’ve discovered that he’s a much better musician than me. I know, like “big surprise” right? I also had a huge crush on him when I was wee, even thinking I might marry him one day. I think my sister had the same aspiration. Now I just wish he’d stop dying his hair. It’s a strange color.

Neither of us ended up marrying Paul McCartney and it’s just as well. I think my sister is happy with her husband and I really like the man that I married too. As a matter of fact, Jim & I will be celebrating our 1st year wedding anniversary tomorrow. For someone that never imagined getting married (me), this is a huge accomplishment. Last year, prior to our wedding at Ferndale City Hall, I wrote a little ditty for Jim, sort of a wedding present from me to him. I recorded this on the Kurzweil, so it’s just sort of a demo demo since I haven’t had much time to really dig my heels into anything lately – I gotta work long hours to buy all the kitten kibble around here. Funny thing is, when I started on this recording the other day, I was kind of mad at Jim, feeling crabby, and I think I got snippy with him at some point, mad about the laundry or the teevee or something stupid. Isn’t it always that way?

So, happy Anniversary dear! Here’s to many more! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

One of Eight

June 16, 2010

Irving Berlin was one of eight children according to Wikipedia. Our similarities end there pretty much. I love this song and I’ve often played it to myself at home on the piano. Sometimes it makes me cry. “What’ll I Do?” was a huge hit for so many singers, like Frank Sinatra. I love Frank Sinatra. The song is over 85 years old but it’s simple sentiment moves me to tears. This is the kind of song I wish I’d written.

I actually got hired to work right at the time I was finishing the last White Album song, “Goodnight”. It’s a temporary job, but the timing couldn’t be more serendipitous. I got a call for another job today too. What’s happening??? I started the blog three days after I lost my job, then I started to work three days after I posted the last song of the White Album…weird.

That’s why today’s song was so simple and recorded late tonight and posted late. I’ve been working 12 hour days. I like the “every nine days” policy of this blogathon but I can do away with the other restrictions now. I’m thinking I might add a new instrument to this song every nine days and see what I come up with. You know, when I have more time to arrange it. Maybe I’ll make Jim play on it. Then I’ll move onto another song. When these 12 hour shifts are over I’ll write something new.

Maybe that Lady Gaga/Irving Berlin mash up will come together after all.

I feel like my band just broke up.

I had to wait until the last minute to post this mostly because I’m just so sad that it’s over. I also waited until tonight to record the song, putting it off, finding other things to do. I had a hard time concentrating. Maybe I’m thinking too much about what to do next…?

I love Goodnight and I love Ringo singing it. Oh! It’s so good! I think it’s the best song on the record. So simple and sweet. Perfect.

In the nine months since September 9, 2009, I’ve recorded these songs hoping to connect my lifelong love for this record with my desire to play and write music. Unfortunately, I never learned how to properly play the guitar and my piano playing didn’t improve much. I think it may have gotten worse today even! I think I got better on the drums. But I’ll never be a professional harmonica player, just in case you were thinking of hiring me for your next record. I did get inspired daily and I kicked my own butt to work on music when I didn’t feel like it. That’s the best thing about this idea. It made me follow through. Good blog, nice blog. Those are very good things. I’m thinking of keeping the blog alive and still recording a song every nine days, just like now only maybe I’ll write some of them myself or record covers other than The Beatles. Maybe an Irving Berlin song! Or maybe I’ll write a pop dance hit like Lady Gaga. Suggestions for covers? Topics for originals? Anyone?

Maybe I should just get a job.

Thank you, to all who listened.
